When a part is being fed through a machine, the featherboard prevents that itthe part can begin to reverse and shoot back. The thin feathers/fingers will bend when the part is put in, and lock it in place if the part reverses direction. If you use one both vertically and horizontally the part is securely fixed when used in eg. a saw or mill.
